What does FREEDOM mean to you?
Here in America, we are gearing up for a holiday weekend, Memorial Day. It is a day to honor those who have given their lives for the freedom of others, which has somehow translated to “Let’s have a BBQ!” I’m all in favor of a good cookout with friends and family, but I think it is also important to take a moment and reflect on freedom.
Freedom is the state of being released from something usually unpleasant. (Merriam-Webster student dictionary — the kids version sums it up best.)
How do you define freedom? What does it look like to you? Is freedom really free?
Everything has a price…even free. There is a cost associated with everything. Now cost doesn’t necessarily mean there will be a monetary exchange, and usually the cost is way greater than any sum physical money could provide. Can you put a price on your freedom?
Freedom will look different for everyone, as everyone’s definition may not be the same as Merriam-Webster’s. For some it means freedom to be their own boss, for others it means the freedom to not live under the confines of someone else’s rules, and for others it may mean to be free from imprisoning, self-deprecating thoughts.
Although freedom may look different to everyone, there is an underpinning consistent message that resonates with many: the freedom of time to do the things in life that matter most. There is no way to put a price on that, it is invaluable.
Freedom is not free, it’s value is immeasurable, and is a precious commodity to be celebrated and embraced with an abundance of gratitude. When we acknowledge what freedom provides us, and practice gratitude, it magnifies and multiplies in our life. Do you have freedom? Chances are if you are seeking it, it is seeking you too. Reflect on what freedom means, how it looks, and what it is worth to you. With that clarity, freedom is yours.
May you be free, may you be at peace.
