Are you actively trying to lose weight?
If so, then you are the one out of five American adults. I came across this statistic in the Healthy Living section of a recent LA Times.
“On any given day, just over one in five American adults are actively trying to lose weight. An additional 50% have tried dieting, but have retreated to old routines while mounting the will to try again.”
The article goes on to say that the weight-loss industry is a $60 billion (Yes, BILLION!) a year industry. People are constantly on the hunt for the next fad diet, quick fix, or the “easy” way.
It also goes on to say, “95% of dieters will regain all the weight they lost within five years, and most will gain a few extra pounds as well.”
How’s that for reassuring? It isn’t and it doesn’t come as a surprise to me at all.
Why am I not surprised? Because dieting is not the solution to the problem. Dieting is short term. This thing called life is something we are trying to do long term…well, at least I am, and hopefully you are too.
There is no one size fits all, which is why one friend may lose 20 pounds going Paleo, and the next person doesn’t budge an inch. What works for one, does not work for all. Then, the real issue is longevity and sustainability. A diet is not sustainable long term.
So, what are you to do? Simply stated, finding a healthy way of eating that becomes your lifestyle. Ditch the diet, because that sets you up for failure, and embrace a healthy lifestyle that will set you up for success.
I recognize it may not be as simple as it’s stated, which is why there are people who can support you through this process and help you navigate your way to your best and healthiest life. Oh, and a really important piece that was missing from this article is the fact that it comes down to more than just the food you eat.
