I’m deeply saddened.

 

I rarely go to this place, especially in my writing that I share, but I’m sickened to the point I can no longer keep it to myself.

Last month, after the Brock Turner ruling, I wrote my monthly piece for Babymama.com, in response. It was written last month, and I worried it would be outdated, or old news, but sadly, it is more prevalent than ever.

I’m ashamed to be a white person.

This skin I am in is a privilege. This skin I am in protects me from injustice, from oppression, from bias, like racial profiling, like unfair treatment for the color of your skin, like being entitled to unlawful behavior, like it protected Brock Turner from getting the sentence he deserved. Have I taken this privilege for granted? Absolutely. Does it entitle me? Absolutely not. A privilege is not a right, however, and I fear I am in the minority with my thinking.

My heart aches for the senseless killings, for the loss of lives. Today, I am choosing to look for the humanity, the goodness in others.

I leave you with a quote from Joseph Campbell:

“Participate joyfully in the sorrows of the world. We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy.”
