Hello, 2017! Happy New Year!

I know it’s a new year, I’ve been anticipating it for awhile now, yet I still find myself writing 2016. Tell me I’m not alone in this. As I scratch out the six and replace it with a seven, it makes me think about the ways in which things often stay the same, even though we vow for it to be different.

With a new year, many vow for a fresh start, clean slate, resolutions galore, etc. In the new year, I will exercise more, eat healthier, be kinder, lose five pounds, journal everyday, start meditating, quit sugar, stop this, start that, and the list goes on and on and on. I say, “Stop the Madness.”

What is it about the clock ticking over at midnight on a single day that all of a sudden makes people resolve to do every single thing that they think would make them a better human?

Just stop. Stop it right now.

Does that mean you shouldn’t exercise more or eat healthier or be kinder? Nope, not at all. Those are all really good things to do, and perhaps you really do need those things in your life. However, you don’t need to do all of it, all at one time, simply because it’s a new year.

You can keep doing the same old thing over and over again, or you can do it differently. If you didn’t start on January 1, then can you still do it? ABSOLUTELY. You don’t have to start on a Monday, or at the beginning of the month, the end of the year, or when Mercury isn’t in retrograde. Just start. Choose your one thing that you will do differently. One thing will help you to be laser focused and when all your energy is devoted to mastering that one thing, then you move on to the next.

Don’t set yourself up for failure, or for falling short of your goals. Instead, set yourself up for your best year yet. Choose one thing to start with. Just one. One priority, not priorities. You’ll get to the rest.

It’s a choice — same old, same old…or doing it differently. What’s it going to be?

Cheers to the new year and doing it differently!

xoxo
